Choosing a global health fellowship is an opportunity to connect classroom learning with real-world experiences. The Global Learning Field Fellowship (GLFF) by Devrite Community Foundation offers international students an opportunity to explore healthcare delivery, learn from Ugandan health professionals, and experience the cultural and community contexts that shape health outcomes in Uganda.
1. A Practical Introduction to Uganda’s Healthcare System
Fellows gain insights into how healthcare services are organised and delivered in Uganda. Through structured clinical observation and guided learning, students can explore primary healthcare, maternal and child health, mental health, disease prevention, and other areas depending on their placement.
2. Learning from Local Health Professionals
Students have opportunities to observe healthcare professionals in their working environments and learn about their roles, experiences, and approaches to patient care. These interactions encourage professional reflection and a deeper understanding of healthcare in a different setting.
3. Community Health and Public Health Learning
Global health extends beyond hospitals and clinics. Fellows can explore how community education, disease prevention, sanitation, health awareness, and social and economic conditions influence health outcomes. Community-based learning helps students appreciate the importance of culturally responsive and accessible healthcare.
4. Cultural Exchange and Immersion
Uganda’s cultural diversity offers fellows opportunities to engage with local communities, learn about traditions and daily life, and develop cross-cultural communication skills. These experiences encourage mutual learning, respect, and a broader global perspective.
5. A Structured Four-Week Learning Journey
The fellowship follows a guided learning journey designed to help students build understanding progressively:
Week 1: Orientation, introduction to Uganda, and an overview of the healthcare system.
Weeks 2–3: Structured clinical observation and guided learning, subject to placement availability.
Week 4: Community health, public health, and cultural learning activities.
6. Professional Growth Through Observation and Reflection
GLFF emphasises learning, mentorship, and reflection rather than independent clinical practice. Students can develop a deeper appreciation of healthcare teamwork, health-system challenges, professional responsibilities, and the social determinants of health.
Importantly, GLFF is an observation-based educational fellowship. Participants do not independently diagnose or treat patients, prescribe medication, or perform clinical procedures. All learning activities are subject to placement arrangements, professional supervision, and applicable safety and confidentiality requirements.
Who Can Benefit from GLFF?
The fellowship may be suitable for university students interested in medicine, nursing, public health, global health, health sciences, and related disciplines who want to broaden their understanding of healthcare in a different cultural and health-system context.
